Balancing Efficiency and Resilience in Multi-modal Supply Chains: summary and conclusions
At an ITF Roundtable in Paris in April 2018, 35 invited specialists from 17 countries discussed the inter-relationship between resilience, efficiency and sustainability in the management of multimodal supply chains. This report, which I wrote as moderator of the event, summarises this discussion. It begins by clarifying definitional issues and outlining key concepts. The main section of the report then examines the trade-offs that companies strike between resilience, efficiency and sustainability and considers how they can be enhanced. It observes that resilience and efficiency objectives are often in conflict, while efficiency and sustainability goals are generally quite well aligned. Later sections of the report show how collaboration and new technology can help businesses make their supply chains more resilient while improving their economic and environmental performance. The report argues that governments also have an important role to play in this process though could exercise it more effectively.
