Electrifying the Highway

My column in the December 2022 edition of Logistics Manager magazine discusses highway electrification as an option for decarbonising heavy goods vehicles.  Seven years of trials in Sweden, Germany and California has shown that the catenary form of electrification, using overhead cabling, is a practical, safe and efficient way of getting low carbon electricity into trucks. Some European motorway companies, however, are more interested in surface-based systems of electrification, while other organisations, most notably several large European truck manufacturers, are sceptical about the whole concept of electrifying road infrastructure.
